Early Modern

All three of my paintings are directly related to the influence of WW1.  The first painting with all of the flags was a direct influence of WWI to the artist who was very patriotic and painted what was going on at the time.  The paintings Great War and Over the Top were painted by war artists.  They were commissioned to paint the war.  Due to all three paintings being obviously influenced by the war, I tried to think about what the artists were feeling about the war when they painted their works.  I think in Hassam’s, Early Morning On The Avenue In May the artist was feeling support and pride. Great War by Nevinson is very stoic and serious.  I believe he was feeling fear and trepidation about the war.  Over the Top by John Nash is so desperate.  I think what he was trying to show the world with this work was the reality of war being devastating and tragic.   Title: Early Morning On The Avenue In May Artist: Frederick Childe Hassam  Year painted: 1917 Oil on canvas  Place painte

Neo Gothic St. Patrick’s Cathedral Architect James Renwick William Rodrigue 1851-79, towers 1888 New York, New York 5th Ave. bet. E50 and E51USA Out of all the pieces I selected for this blog St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York has my favorite outside exterior.  I could stand and stare at its details for hours.  The inside view of the rib vault doesn't even show from the outside.  My favorite part of this structure is the cutouts in the large circle window. The stain glass throughout this building is so colorful. This building has what my real estate agent calls gingerbread.  All those cutouts around the windows and steeples.  It just provides this cathedral with so much depth and texture. When lit up inside all the arches on the inside just light up the layers of lines and grooves.  This cathedral takes up an entire block of prime New York real estate.  I love how the shape of the roof forms a cross from above.  I was reading reviews on it and some comments said that it wa

Welcome to my virtual exhibit on Art and Scientific Discovery in the 1700’s    The Landing at Tanna, One of the New Hebrides Painted 1775-1776 London, England, Oil on Canvas. Artist is Willam Hodges I selected this piece of Captain Cook because I love the artwork in the Captain Cook hotel in Anchorage.  There are several original pieces in the hotel of Captain Cook, his ships and his voyages.  I also went to Oahu, Hawaii this month and this piece reminded me of that location.  While in Hawaii I found myself wondering what the Hawaiians looked like hundreds of years ago.  In this era, this piece of art was created because of the discovery of new places and people that were discovered.  The world Europeans knew was growing and this piece reflects that discovery. I not only like the subject matter but love the idea that the artist William Hodges created works to show others what these places and people looked like.  It must have been very exciting when these explorers came back with the
